| Journal notes, some run time on the newest version GELLER Labs "Backyard Science" Thoughts on a proton precession magnetometer design - a Proton Magnetometer Project. Build an Earth's field magnetometer.
The FDM MAGNETOMETER1 project is a low cost high performance proton magnetometer (a digital magnetometer) kit under development for universities and amateur scientists to be able to accurately measure and monitor changes in the Earth's total magnetic F field and to observe geomagnetic storms. Magnetic storms can cause large excursions in the field and are of concern to interests ranging from electrical power grids, radio communications, and satellite operations, to aurora watchers and amateur radio operators. 1 Filter Diagonalization Method "FDM" (harmonic inversion), see Jan 21 and Jan 23 entries, based on: Vladimir A. Mandelshtam, Howard S. Taylor, Harmonic inversion of time signals and its applications, Journal of Chemical Physics (1997), Volume 107, Issue 17, 1997, Pages 6756-6769 (be sure to hit refresh to pick up our latest changes and entries)

Journal Notes: Monday, November 22, 2010 Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Wednesday, November 24, 2010 Thursday, November 25, 2010 Overnight: PDF, TXT. I hope to work on the software next week, then we will get a couple of more people to build and try out the experiment. After that it is just a matter of putting together a first limited run of the kits (not including computer, NI USB 6008 digitizer and control module, cables, wood and PVC parts or the #18 wire for the counter-wound sensor coils). So, the kits will primarily be the boards and parts for the NBLNA board, the SWCTRL board, and the operating software for a FDM magnetometer as described on our docs and articles pages. The first FDM proton precession magnetometer kits are probably still at least a couple to three months off. Saturday, November 27, 2010 Overnight: PDF, TXT, more quiet magnetograms, there had been no significant geomagnetic activity for some time now. Some geomagnetic activity this afternoon / evening (K4): PDF. later evening, continued relatively minor sub-storm activity PDF, Wing Kp PDF. Sunday, November 28, 2010 Overnight: PDF, TXT. It seems from a global persective, we hit Kp 5 for a brief time yesterday, 7day Wing Kp PDF, although here in upstate, NY, the disturbance in the scalar F total field was relatively minor. It was nothing like the relatively mild G2 magnetic storm of August 3, 2010. Monday, November 29, 2010 Overnight: PDF, TXT. The geomagnetic field was very quiet overnight. Tuesday, November 30, 2010 Overnight: PDF, TXT. The geomagnetic field was quiet overnight.
